Storm Survivors to Receive Critical Supplies from PADF
Chevron contribution will help thousands in Guatemala
Washington, D.C., June 7,
2010 – Urgently needed food, water and
other basic necessities are on their way to
survivors of the devastating Tropical Storm
Agatha in Guatemala, the Pan American
Development Foundation (PADF) announced. (www.PanAmericanRelief.org)
“Thanks to this generous contribution
by Chevron, operating in the region under the
Texaco brand, our neighbors who were severely
affected in Guatemala will receive help,” says
John Sanbrailo, PADF’s executive
director. “Many people have lost
everything and these supplies will help to
alleviate their suffering.”
The
recipients are living in shelters after their
homes were destroyed or severely damaged by the
May 30 storm. The shelters, located in the
province of El Progreso, house some 2,000
people. PADF is coordinating the distribution
with Fundación Castillo Cordova and the
American Chamber of Commerce in
Guatemala.
“During this time of great
need, Chevron is eager to provide immediate
assistance to following the aftermath of
Tropical Storm Agatha,” said Damon Echevarría,
area sales manager for Retail/ Commercial &
Industrial operations in Central America and
Andean Area for Chevron Products Company. “Our
thoughts and prayers are with the hundreds of
families affected by this devastation and we
are committed to helping these communities
along their path to recovery.”
Tropical Storm Agatha hit Guatemala, El
Salvador and Honduras, causing over 180 deaths,
at least 100 missing people and affecting
170,000. In Guatemala City, a 200 foot sinkhole
swallowed a three-story clothing factory in a
busy intersection.
“Chevron’s generous
donation is just the beginning,” says
Sanbrailo. “There is so much more that still
needs to be done.”
PADF, the natural
disaster response arm of the Organization of
American States (OAS), accepts donations from
individuals and companies to help the survivors
when a natural disaster strikes. Cash donations
